EPI-HAB: Your “Jack-Of-All-Trades” Hand Labor Solution

EPI-HAB Phoenix Inc. was founded in 1958 by a group of business and medical professionals who volunteered their time and efforts to form a company “to provide employment opportunities for individuals with epilepsy.” Over its 50+ years, EPI-HAB has assisted hundreds of individuals with epilepsy and other challenges while at the same time providing the workspace, skilled workforce, and refined processes to be the “jack-of-all-trades” hand labor solution to businesses large and small!

EPI-HAB specializes in hand labor of all types: assembly and disassembly, inspection, repair work, packaging, product quality checking, cleaning, mailings, fulfillment, shrink wrapping as well as delivery and storage! Additionally, the company is suited for jobs of all sizes, from the large business needing increased production during its peak season to the individual needing help with a bulk mailing.

Below, we’ve highlighted some recent projects showcasing the diversity of services EPI-HAB provides.

Mailings at EPI-HAB

Is your company overwhelmed with a mailing project? EPI-HAB’s staff can help with hand sorting, stuffing, collating, sealing and applying labels and postage!

In this example, the EPI-HAB team is inserting multiple pages into an insurance enrollment folder and repackaging the folders to be sent out to customers.

Fulfillment at EPI-HAB

EPI-HAB offers a full suite of fulfillment services, including:

    • Receiving inbound goods from your suppliers
    • Inventorying and storing your goods
    • Collating items, assembling and/or packaging items according to your requirements
    • Receiving your daily, weekly, monthly or sporadic orders by phone, fax or e-mail
    • Picking/packing and shipping your products to your customers per your requirements
    • Updating inventories and communicating transactions and supply levels

EPI-HAB is a trusted partner of Heckler Design, working with the company from start to finish (i.e., assembly, packaging, quality control, and shipping) on a wide range of fulfillment projects, including stands to mount technology for point-of-sale use and office furniture.

Our skilled hand laborers were also recently tasked with a fulfillment project for ToneWoodAmp.

3-tonewoodamp

EPI-HAB is the leading order fulfillment specialist for product developers and startup companies who lack the infrastructure to handle a surge in orders. Many business owners are also unaware of all that goes into the shipping process to keep costs down and customers happy. If your garage-based business is growing and you’re in need of a helping hand, EPI-HAB is your cost-effective manufacturing, packaging and shipping solution!

Assembly and Inspection at EPI-HAB

Rather than staff, train and lay-off or pay overtime for your peak periods and emergency needs, why not save time and money by hiring EPI-HAB’s skilled assembly and inspection team? As with our mailing and fulfillment services, EPI-HAB offers turnkey assembly and inspection services to a wide range of industries, including medical devices.  The photo below showcases a recent project the EPI-HAB team completed for Micro Tech Southwest. The EPI-HAB team assembles and inspects the company’s catheter adapters.

EPI-HAB also receives shipments of SRP M-Power units multiple times a day—sometimes receiving as many as 3,600 units per week.  Our team strips the units of their packaging, sorts them by model number and transports the units to the computer scanning operation where each unit is logged. The EPI-HAB inspection team also “scopes” each unit for operational defects. The M-Power units that pass are deep cleaned, repackaged and warehoused.

In January, the EPI-HAB team assembled and delivered these elaborate gift baskets for the Arizona Commerce Commission. EPI-HAB is equipped to help all destination centers, casinos, hotels, conference centers, and guest relations companies with assembly and collation operations. We assist many companies with the preparation of convention materials and goodie bags.

A great example of inspection services offered by EPI-HAB is the Phoenix Suns commemorative glass project our team completed in January. EPI-HAB inspected, sorted, and delivered close to 33,000 glasses that were given away to game attendees.

Repairs at EPI-HAB

EPI-HAB can also help companies with repair work. EPI-HAB saved the day for a corrugated box maker dealing with quality defects in the company’s boxes. The EPI-HAB team received the boxes, broke open each bundle, inspected every box, repaired all of the defective boxes and then re-bundled, re-palletized and packed the finished boxes to send to the end user. This saved the customer the cost of re-running the job, the corrugated waste and delays to the end user.

“White Glove” Service at EPI-HAB

Does your product require a clean or sterile environment? “White glove” treatment is another unique service offered by EPI-HAB. Heckler Design, for example, was in need of meticulous “white glove” services for the company’s Air Conference Room Frames that were manufactured with a high-gloss metal finish. EPI-HAB employees, using white gloves, Q-tips, polish, shammy cloths and plenty of “elbow grease,” thoroughly polished, bagged, boxed and shipped the products to a thrilled customer!

Storage at EPI-HAB

EPI-HAB’s warehouse is secure and racked for pallet storage. We unload your palletized materials (40” x  48” x  50”), place the materials in assigned space and pull it out for you when you wish to remove it. Charges are month-to-month per number of pallets. Special inventories, fulfillment from your palletized materials and transportation services are available!

With decades of experience, EPI-HAB is poised to be your go-to “jack-of-all-trades” hand labor solution!

EPI-HAB: Your Business’ Secret Weapon

For decades, EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. has helped businesses, large and small, overcome challenges with growth and logistics.  The company helps save time, money and space with its hand labor solutions; including mailings, inspection/cleaning, assembly and custom packaging, storage and order fulfillment.

Sometimes, however, we have found prospective customers underestimate the variety of businesses that can benefit from our organization, and it’s easy to get lost in our long list of services without knowing how related businesses are successfully partnering with EPI-HAB.

For that reason, we’ve taken some time to collate three recent success stories from some very different companies, across a variety of sectors.

Challenge 1 – “Gift Bag Burdens”

So…you’re giving an awards banquet for 500 of your “besties,” and you want each guest to have a gift bag, but you don’t have the space or crew to collate and assemble the gifts in time. What do you do?

The Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce was faced with this very dilemma, but they had a secret weapon: EPI-HAB’s phone number (602-254-7027) in their back pocket.

thumbnail_Gift Bag Burdens

Solution:  EPI-HAB received and stored the various gift bag items, collated and assembled the bags, and then packed and delivered them to the banquet hall the day of the Chamber’s “Impact Awards Dinner.”

Challenge 2 – “Defect Distress”

One of EPI-HAB’s customers, a corrugated box maker, experienced an equipment problem which resulted in defects to its boxes. Not noticing the problem until the job was complete, the box maker was faced with two options: scrap the boxes and rerun the operation OR find a cost-effective, timely way to fix the defects.

thumbnail_Defect Distress

Solution:  EPI-HAB stepped in as the box maker’s “quicker fixer!” The EPI-HAB team received the boxes, broke open each bundle, inspected every box, repaired all of the defective boxes and then re-bundled, re-palletized and packed the finished boxes to send to the end user. This saved the customer the cost of re-running the job, the corrugated waste and delays to the end user.

Challenge 3 – “White Glove Worries”

Heckler Design, one of EPI-HAB’s largest customers, was in need of an uncommon, labor-intensive and meticulous “white glove service” for the company’s Air Conference Room Frames that were manufactured with a high-gloss metal finish.

thumbnail_White Glove Worries

Solution: EPI-HAB employees, using white gloves, Q-tips, polish, shammy cloths and plenty of “elbow grease,” thoroughly cleaned and polished the units. The dazzling frames were then bagged, boxed and shipped to a very satisfied customer.

We’d love for your company to become the world’s next EPI-HAB success story! To learn more about EPI-HAB’S mail processing, fulfillment, assembly, inspection and storage solutions, call: 602-254-7027 or complete our online inquiry form.

EPI-HAB Partners with ToneWoodAmp Providing Assembly, Packaging and Fulfillment

EPI-HAB was recently tasked with the full assembly, packaging and fulfillment of a project for ToneWoodAmp.

Developed by musical innovator, Ofer Webman, the ToneWoodAmp allows a guitarist to play with different effects, unplugged – with the effects emanating organically from the guitar’s sound hole and the body itself. Similar to the way the strings excite the top of the guitar to produce sound, ToneWoodAmp excites the back of the instrument, producing sound waves of effects such as reverb, echo, delay, tremolo and more, which interact with the natural sound of the guitar itself. The ToneWoodAmp is also an iDevice interface allowing musicians to experiment with audio and MIDI apps.

To give you a better idea of the sound variations the amp provides, we encourage you to check out Andy Wood from Rascal Flatts playing Kashmir with the ToneWoodAmp!

This is one of the first projects the EPI-HAB team has been been involved in from assembly through the fulfillment of each unit. We love being presented with new challenges!

Below are the different steps that went into the manufacturing of this innovative product:

  • The project began with the assembly of the amp with a programmed circuit board, batteries, case, control knobs and labels.

epi1

(Note: This assembly involving the circuit board, batteries and accessories took place in a static-controlled area within EPI-HAB’s facilties.)

  • After assembly, our team members quality tested each unit.

epi2

  • Next came the assembly of each unit’s three corrugated packaging components: the box, lower tray, and upper tray.

epi3

  • The completely assembled units, along with a corresponding cord and X brace, were then inserted into a corrugated box with trays.

epi4

  • In the final step of the ToneWoodAmp project, the EPI-HAB team finalized the units’ packaging and slid the sleeves over the corrugated boxes, readying the ToneWoodAmps for fulfillment!

About EPI-HAB:
EPI-HAB brings more than 57 years of experience and energy to fulfillment, assembly and inspection, full-service mail processing, and storage. As a 501(c) 3 organization, we are totally self-sufficient while providing meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with epilepsy and other challenges.  EPI-HAB focuses on the abilities of its employees, not their disabilities, and performs valued work for businesses, large and small, assisting them with a wide variety of projects ranging from the assembly of medical devices to order fulfillment.

What’s New at EPI-HAB?

Founded in 1958, EPI-HAB Phoenix Inc. is a totally self-sufficient, not-for-profit company focused on providing meaningful employment for individuals with epilepsy and other challenges, primarily through hand labor services.

Over the past couple of months, we’ve had some exciting company updates and projects rolling through our doors. Here’s a quick snapshot of what we’ve been up to:

At the end of February, the EPI-HAB team collated and stuffed 2,300 backpacks with booklets, information sheets and other unique swag for the annual Waste Management Symposium that took place at the Phoenix Convention Center.

epi1

EPI-HAB can also help businesses with the assembly of sales collateral or informational packets. The Salt River Project approached us this month looking for help with the assembly of 5,000 New Construction Kits. The project was made up of four steps:

  1. Pre-work: Inserting info sheets into protective pages
  2. Pre-work: Inserting CDs and DVDs into protective pages
  3. Assembly of the notebook/kit
  4. Finalizing the New Construction Kit

epi2

Why choose EPI-HAB for assembly/collation services?

Gift baskets, swag bags, and informational kits or packets can be very effective marketing tactics, but can also be incredibly time consuming to compile, especially if you want to keep essential employees working on the tasks they’re best at. Reach out to EPI-HAB to save your employees’ time! With our help, your assembly/collation work will be completed thoroughly and efficiently.

epi3

Early this month, EPI-HAB took on a fun, tech-related project for Heckler Design. Our team assembled WindFall Stands that are used to mount iPads for point-of-sale use. We are proud to be Heckler Design’s fulfillment, assembly and shipping partner.

epi4

We also saw repeat business from valued client Micro Tech Southwest, Inc. The EPI-HAB team assembled and inspected 300,000 Touhy Borst Adapters (catheter adapters) for the medical device manufacturer, ensuring quality. Prior to connecting with EPI-HAB, the catheter adapter’s assembly and inspection was outsourced to Mexico. We are pleased we can continue to offer the company a timely, cost-effective solution here in the U.S.

epi5

EPI-HAB also receives shipments of M-Power units multiple times per day. Our team strips the units of their packaging, sorts them by model number, and transports the units to the computer scanning operation where each unit is scanned into a log. By scanning the pin numbers, each returned M-Power unit is recorded, so deposit monies can be properly refunded. The EPI-HAB inspection team also “scopes” each unit for operational defects. The M-Power units that pass are then deep cleaned. After being cleaned, the M-Power units are repackaged with new informational brochures, and then individually boxed/skidded units are returned to the warehouse, where they’ll await re-issue to the next customer.

epi6

Finally, last but not least, both EPI-HAB’s building and website underwent facelifts!

We are very excited to announce the launch of our new website: www.epihab.org. The new site has a fresh new look and improved functionality to better serve our clients. We’ve updated content and integrated responsive web design. The responsive design provides visitors with an optimal viewing experience. Whether you’re using a computer or mobile device, you will find EPI-HAB’s new site easy to read, with minimal resizing, panning and scrolling. We also aim to keep the website as interactive as possible, so keep an eye out for regular blogs and updates!

epi7

EPI-HAB’s building will also be seeing $30,000 worth of concrete repair work. The minerals in the water are extremely aggressive, and over time, will deteriorate concrete and rebar. Please Note: EPI-HAB is still open during this construction and eager to help you with your next labor-intensive project!

Meet the Team: An Interview with Torrey Rogers, EPI-HAB’s Controller

At EPI-HAB, we can’t say enough about our employees’ dedication and determination. The team’s collective backgrounds and variety of skill sets help us develop creative solutions to our clients’ challenges and ensure their high expectations are always met. This month, we are excited to continue our series of blog entries and e-blasts introducing EPI-HAB’s hardworking employees to our readers, friends and partners.

February’s employee spotlight features Torrey Rogers, EPI-HAB’s highly-esteemed Controller:

Torrey, a native of Sheridan, Wyoming, transferred from Sheridan Community College to attend DeVry University Phoenix. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. After college, Torrey developed a successful career in home remodeling, but when the housing market took a turn in 2009, he knew it was time to seek out new opportunities. Torrey applied for the Controller position at EPI-HAB and met with Matt Redmann (Executive Director) and the retiring Controller. He was instantly taken with EPI-HAB’s mission of providing meaningful employment for individuals with epilepsy and other challenges by performing valued work for area businesses. “Taking the job was an easy decision,” Torrey says.

As EPI-HAB’s Controller, Torrey is tasked with directing all of EPI-HAB’s financial accounting operations, as well as the planning, managing, training and maintenance of EPI-HAB’s PC-networked computer system.  Additionally, Torrey serves as the principle liaison to the external auditor and interacts monthly with the Board of Directors.

What do you like most about your job?

T: I enjoy the range of different tasks. In the short time I’ve been at EPI-HAB, I have been able to gain experience in all departments.

What are the biggest challenges in your position?

T: As it pertains to marketing, I don’t know whether I’m measuring the right things. Open rates, number of followers and traffic are all important, but there must be a formula to quantify and connect our efforts to hard results such as growth and revenue. Additionally, I’d like to be more effective at targeting and identifying who it is I should be marketing to.

What are some company achievements, successes or milestones you are proud of?

T: I am proud of the work I’ve done with Matt to develop and implement a marketing plan.

What are your hobbies? What do you do during your time out of the office?

T: I like short trips to Las Vegas, sunbathing, and attending sporting events. I have also developed a passion and appreciation for premium cigars.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Why is it important?

T: My parents taught me to always be a leader and not a follower. As a youngster, that advice kept me out of a lot of trouble, and as an adult, it’s brought me lots of success.

Additionally, to further develop his leadership skills, Torrey recently completed a nine-month Nonprofit Leadership program by ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy & Nonprofit Innovation. The class was made up of approximately thirty professionals from the nonprofit sector and met once a month at a different local nonprofit. Subjects included using social media, how to enlist board members and advocacy in nonprofits. Torrey also had the opportunity to meet with several leaders and celebrities in the nonprofit sector.

Inside EPI-HAB: What Has the Team Been up to This Month?

2016 has already been a whirlwind of excitement at EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc.! Below are a few examples of recently completed projects we are eager to showcase.

We encourage you to click the photos to enlarge them.

EPI-HAB is very experienced in setting up efficient assembly/collation operations. So, as the new year was beginning, our team grabbed the bull by the horns (yet again) and assembled these elaborate gift baskets.  The baskets were given to members of the BCS committee (who were attending the BCS Championship football game here in Phoenix) by EPI-HAB’s client, the Arizona Commerce Authority.  The gift baskets were covered with a decorative cellophane bag and topped with a festive bow. At EPI-HAB, we customize to perfectly fit our customers’ needs and brand.

collage2

The EPI-HAB team bags and tags approximately 3,000 bags per month–one of many hand-labor activities done to support HecklerDesign.  The pictured work includes collating foam pieces, mating them, inserting them into a zippered bag and tagging them with a part number/name.

Why choose EPI-HAB for gift basket assembly and fulfillment services?

  • Save money – by only paying for the hours and space you currently need/use
  • Save time – by eliminating the need to recruit/hire/train/manage a skilled workforce
  • Save space – by only occupying the square footage you need today, with the flexibility to grow tomorrow

Additionally, by contracting EPI-HAB for assembly work, your valuable employees will have more time to concentrate on their unique jobs that cannot be outsourced.

For two weeks in January, EPI-HAB also inspected and sorted 33,000 commemorative glasses honoring the Phoenix Suns basketball team legends. EPI-HAB then delivered the glasses that had passed the meticulous inspection to the Sun’s arena, where they will be given away to game attendees at four specially designated Suns games.

Why choose EPI-HAB for inspection?

To keep customers happy, EPI-HAB will eliminate the risk of shipping mistakes or faulty items. And with 65,000 square feet of space, EPI-HAB is equipped to handle jobs of all sizes.

As we continue our work throughout 2016, we’re thankful for our customers and the rewarding projects we’ve helped them complete.

EPI-HAB brings more than 57 years of experience and energy to fulfillment, full-service mail processing, and storage. As a 501(c) 3 organization, we are totally self-sufficient.  We provide meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with epilepsy and other challenges.  EPI-HAB focuses on the abilities of its employees, not their disabilities and performs valued work for businesses, large and small, assisting them with a wide variety of projects ranging from the assembly of medical devices to order fulfillment.

EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. Gets in the Christmas Spirit

It’s an important date that has been marked in our calendars for months…

EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. stopped operations at noon last Friday to hold its annual staff Christmas party. It was a great excuse for our employees to let their hair down and celebrate another successful year.

So how are the holidays celebrated at EPI-HAB?

With a variety of dishes brought in from all of our employees alongside turkey and ham provided by Affordable Catering, we enjoyed a bountiful holiday feast–everyone was ooh-ing and ahh-ing with every delectable bite.

epi1

EPI-HAB’s Executive Director, Matt Redmann, showed his appreciation for our team’s hard work by handing out a t-shirt and check to every employee and a gift to every board member.

epi2

At the end of the celebration, gifts were raffled off to a handful of lucky employees.

A fantastic time was had by all. We are very thankful representatives from Heckler Design, SRP, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, E2 Innovations, EPI-HAB board members and more than 50 of EPI-HAB’s employees were able to join in the fun.

We’d also like to extend a thank you to all of EPI-HAB’s loyal customers. We appreciate you and your business and look forward to servicing you well in 2016! As we head into the new year, we are very excited and optimistic about what the future holds.

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Meet the Team: An Interview with Matt Redmann, Executive Director

EPI-HAB’s team members are the heart and soul of the organization. Their wealth of intelligence, experience, and dedication has been the key to EPI-HAB’s success. So this month, we’re kicking off a series of blog entries and e-blasts introducing EPI-HAB’s hardworking employees to our readers, friends, and partners.

October’s employee spotlight features Matt Redmann, the Executive Director of EPI-HAB:

Matt, a self-proclaimed “die-hard cheesehead,” was born and raised in Weyauwega, WI and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, NY. He graduated with a BS in General Engineering and later earned his MBA in Management from the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.  In 2006, Matt joined EPI-HAB as their first Executive Director and is responsible for all facets of the company’s planning and operation, including personnel, safety, quality, sales, finances, facilities, and equipment.

Matt recognizes that all his efforts are mission focused: to provide meaningful employment for individuals with epilepsy and other challenges by performing valued work for customers.

NfeIsGdeVriSJBcF7lkk_anMaTqR2oWvfpLRnp4F9-s,68uf0M-74Rg5cPG60XSghOjVnBuB49GWVXQMAhUcqKg

What do you like most about your job?

M: The EPI-HAB family of employees, caregivers, board members, customers and support service providers–they have become my family.

What are the biggest challenges in your position?

M: Selling EPI-HAB’s services, primarily the “hand labor” services. As EPI-HAB’s employees continue to improve efficiencies, more sales are required to provide employment for the same number of workers. In order to increase the number of EPI-HAB employees, even more work is needed.

What are some company achievements, successes, or milestones you are proud of?

M: EPI-HAB is now 57 years old. We are totally self-sufficient (receive no aid, no charitable donations, no government grants) and we are debt free and financially solvent.

What is currently motivating you/exciting you within the industry in which you work?

M: The never-ending pursuit for new sales opportunities (short-term, one-time sales and on-going long term sales). More sales allow EPI-HAB to sustain a larger workforce. And when faced with excess profits, EPI-HAB makes it a habit of contributing to local charities.

What are your hobbies? What do you do during your time out of the office?

M: I love to golf and travel. Sometimes I’m able to both at the same time. I also dabble in home improvement projects.

What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Why is it important?

M: In all things, “do your best.”

At this point in my life and career, essentially working for no boss, one must be self-motivated and driven to doing one’s best in all situations.

What are your goals for EPI-HAB this year?

M: Zero injuries, increase EPI-HAB’s Net Sales (year over year) and increase the number of employees

EPI-HAB Attends Charity Night to Support the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona

epi 2Torrey Rogers, EPI-HAB’s Controller, was out in force this month, representing  EPI-HAB and showing its support for the charitable work done by the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona.

Since 1973, The Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona has been committed to the welfare of those suffering from epilepsy. The organization works to prevent and cure seizure disorders, alleviate their effects, and promote independence and optimal quality of life for individuals with the disorders.

This year’s gala honored Dr. Joseph Drazkowski with the Commitment to Epilepsy award and celebrated in memory of Ray Krueger with the Outstanding Fundraiser of the Year award.

“EPI-HAB’s presence at the event is an example of one nonprofit supporting another,” explained Rogers.

epi3

Epilepsy in Arizona
Epilepsy is a generic term for a group of diseases characterized by recurring seizures. A seizure is a sudden surge of electrical activity in the brain that usually affects how a person feels or acts for a short period of time. Severe symptoms can include violent shaking and loss of control.

More than 66,000 Arizonans suffer from this disease; yet it remains one of the most misunderstood health issues. Even after receiving treatment, half of the people suffering from epilepsy continue having seizures. Many have trouble with employment, transportation, and social interaction.

EPI-HAB Supports Individuals Living with Epilepsy and its Many Challenges
At Epi-Hab, we provide meaningful employment opportunities for those with epilepsy. Typical work focuses on hand labor skills, and employees are paid at or above minimum wage with flexible hours.
