A Look Back at EPI-HAB’s 60th Anniversary Celebration

EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. was founded in 1958 when a group of business and medical professionals came together to provide meaningful employment to individuals with epilepsy. As the medical industry made strides in the control of epileptic seizures, EPI-HAB (Epileptic Habitat) welcomed individuals with other challenges; hearing impairment, physical limitations, and mild mental difficulties. Through its 60 years in business, EPI-HAB has always focused on the abilities of its employees, not their disabilities.  And by supporting a variety of businesses of all sizes by providing a wide range of valued hand labor services, EPI-HAB continues to grow.

To commemorate six decades as a stalwart in the community, EPI-HAB celebrated with a thank-you picnic honoring employees, board members, families and friends.  The 70+ employees and guests reminisced about previous EPI-HAB milestones and memories, enjoyed a delicious burger and hot dog spread and cut into the celebratory cake.

Over the last six months, EPI-HAB made “Six Decades of Service” donations, totaling $60,000, to a wide variety of organizations, including Soldiers Best FriendSunshine AcresLura Turner HomesCops for Kids, AZ Strut’s Techie CampThe Epilepsy Foundation of ArizonaPhoenix Children’s HospitalArizona Animal Welfare League & SPCALions Camp Tatiyee,  Ryan House and Valley Center of the Deaf. Many of the charities benefiting from EPI-HAB’s giveback campaign support EPI-HAB with employees and work.

When presenting the gifts, EPI-HAB’s leadership was given a guided tour of each local non-profit.

“Phoenix is blessed with a lot of caring people,” said Torrey Rogers, EPI-HAB’s controller. “Everyone was very warm and extremely passionate about their non-profit.”

Torrey was especially impressed with Sunshine Acres.

“Coming from a family where five of six children were adopted, I have a special connection with Sunshine Acre’s mission,” he explained.

Torrey also spent two weeks training to run in the 2018 5K for Epilepsy, an event that helps raise epilepsy awareness and funds to help sustain the Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona. EPI-HAB donated $3,000 in support of the event and Torrey completed the race in an impressive 30 minutes.

Speaking at the picnic, EPI-HAB’s President, Matt Redmann said:

“As we commemorate 60 years, we recall all the many employees, past and present, who have benefited from EPI-HAB’s existence as well as the businesses and individuals for whom EPI-HAB provided services. We think of our woodworking days, our years of assembly and fulfillment of medical devices, our bulk mailings, our cleaning, inspection and packaging of meters and many smaller tasks. Each customer was important. Each work assignment provided EPI-HAB’s people with opportunities. Our sixty years included boom times and lean years, growth and economic downturns.  But together, as a family, EPI-HAB weathered the good and bad, and today, our organization is strong and poised to grow. Onward to 75 years!”

EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. reached its $60,000 donation goal with a final $6,000 “Six Decades of Service” gift to Valley Center of the Deaf (VCD), a Phoenix-based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization providing services to individuals who are deaf, hard of hearing, and deaf and blind.

EPI-HAB’s “Six Decades of Service” Celebration

To commemorate its 60 years in business, EPI-HAB announced in January it would donate a total of $60,000 to local non-profits in the coming months. To-date, “Six Decades of Service” donations have been made to Soldiers Best Friend, Sunshine AcresLura Turner HomesCops for KidsTechie CampThe Epilepsy Foundation of ArizonaPhoenix Children’s HospitalArizona Animal Welfare League & SPCALions Camp TatiyeeRyan House and most recently, VCD.

“A great many employees (past and present), local businesses and individuals worked together to make EPI-HAB thrive and provide six decades of meaningful employment opportunities for those with epilepsy and other challenges,” said Matt Redmann, President of EPI-HAB.  “To give back to our fellow non-profits, what better way to say ‘thank you’ to our customers, friends and community for supporting us since 1958?”

About EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc.

EPI-HAB was founded in 1958 with the mission to provide meaningful employment to individuals with epilepsy by performing valued work for customers. Over the last six decades, as epilepsy seizure treatment significantly improved, EPI-HAB expanded its mission to welcome employees living with other challenges, such as hearing impairment, physical limitations and mild intellectual disabilities.

Typical work focuses on hand labor skills, with EPI-HAB often operating as a customer’s production plant and warehouse; receiving, storing and fulfilling orders. All employees are paid at or above minimum wage and have the option of a flexible work schedule.

EPI-HAB is unique in that it does not solicit donations or charitable contributions, receive any grants—government or otherwise—nor does it conduct fundraisers. It operates and competes, for the most part, as a for-profit business.

With that revenue stream, wages and benefits are paid, materials and supplies are purchased, and investments are made in capital improvements. Moreover, excess profits are donated to other not-for-profit organizations which share similar objectives.

Recognizing the challenges of its many hearing-impaired employees, EPI-HAB determined that VCD was the perfect organization to receive its final “Six Decades of Service” donation.

About Valley Center of the Deaf

VCD was established in 1978 by members of the Phoenix area deaf community to provide interpretive services to the deaf and hard of hearing. The organization now bridges the gap between the deaf culture and hearing communities by providing many services not available elsewhere:

  • Orientation and Adjustment – Helping clients understand and accept their disabilities
  • Orientation and Mobility Training – Teaching clients how to use public transportation and successfully communicate with people in public
  • Education Support – Interpreting, program planning, deaf awareness instruction, and tutoring for deaf and hard of hearing students attending Maricopa County community colleges
  • Independent Living – Teaching life skills and how to access appropriate community resources to help clients maintain their level of independence
  • Vocational Evaluation – Helping clients determine and explore possible career options by evaluating job interests, aptitude, academic skills, personality, behaviors and special needs
  • Community Services – Increasing clients’ access to cultural and entertainment events

Hearing loss is a low-incidence disability that is often overlooked in a larger hearing community, and those with hearing loss face formidable communication barriers. Sharing the same goals as EPI-HAB, VCD looks to empower these individuals by helping them live and work independently. VCD has provided EPI-HAB with several employees over recent years.

What’s next for EPI-HAB?

“Now, as EPI-HAB reaches its goal of donating $60,000 to celebrate our 60th anniversary, we THANK all involved…our employees, our board members (present and past), and our many, many customers,” said Redmann.  “With everyone working together, EPI-HAB is stronger today and poised for an even brighter future…on to 75 years!”

Touching Two Lives at Once: EPI-HAB Supports Soldier’s Best Friend

On Memorial Day, our nation will come together to honor the men and women who gave their lives in service to our country, but soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines continue to risk their lives around the world every day.  So it is also important to reflect on the sacrifices being made by those still fighting.

War changes lives forever; veterans often struggle with war-zone memories long after they return home. Invisible wounds,” such as combat-related post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI), affect approximately 20 percent of all veterans. These conditions are commonly treated with therapy and medication—though, less-conventional methods, such as service dogs, have also proven to be extremely beneficial.

As part of its Six Decades of Service Celebration, EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. advanced its 60th Anniversary mission with a $6,000 donation to Soldier’s Best Friend, a service/ therapeutic companion dog program pairing rescue dogs with veterans living with PTSD or TBI.

sbf collage

The non-profit program serves as a parallel support plan to a veteran’s medical treatments.  It seeks to manage conditions such as:

  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Reclusive behavior
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Memory loss
  • Physical pain

By lessening these PTSD/TBI symptoms, Soldier’s Best Friend (SBF) reduces the participating veterans’ risk for future hospitalization, homelessness, incarceration, domestic abuse and/or suicide.

Moreover, SBF looks to touch two lives at once. Most of its vetted service and therapeutic companion dogs are rescued from Arizona shelters.

“You’re saving two lives at once,” explained Elaine Ransdell, a Soldier’s Best Friend board member. “You’re saving a veteran, and you’re giving a homeless dog an honorable job.”

On average, veteran/dog teams complete training in 6-9 months, with the placement, training and supplies being provided at no cost to the veteran.

For more information about volunteering or donating to SBF, please visit soldiersbestfriend.org

EPI-HAB Advances $60K Mission with Donation to Sunshine Acres Children’s Home

On May 9, EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. continued its “Six Decades of Service” celebration with a $6,000 donation to Sunshine Acres Children’s Home.

32084200_1774579552564659_3587712347013120000_n

Sunshine Acres provides a loving home for children who are separated from their parents and helps them establish long-term relationships with stable parental figures—preparing them for success in their adult lives. Since it was founded by Jim and Vera Dingman in 1954, Sunshine Acres has helped more than 2,000 children maximize their potential and abilities through counseling, lessons in the fine arts, tutors, on-site horseback riding lessons, and other programs to facilitate each child’s needs and interests. The non-profit is more than just a foster home to the children it serves, it is their extended family.

EPI-HAB looks to also raise awareness for Sunshine Acres through its “Six Decades of Service” gift, as the children’s home relies heavily on the generosity of donors. Sunshine Acres is similar to EPI-HAB in that it does not receive state or federal funding to support its mission, nor does it conduct any formal fundraising.

Sunshine Acres has two basic principles: The organization never solicits money, and no child will ever be turned away for financial reasons.

And unlike many other foster homes, the Sunshine Acres community continues to support its residents when they turn 18—moving college students and those in need into Sunshine Acre’s transitional living program.

“For 64 years, Sunshine Acres has truly been a ‘Miracle in the Desert.’” stated Matt Redmann, President of EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. “We simply wanted to be a small part of their story.”

EPI-HAB’s Six Decades of Service Celebration

Since January, EPI-HAB has made donations to a long list of local organizations and events, including Lura Turner Homes, Cops for Kids, Techie Camp, The Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA, Lions Camp Tatiyee and Ryan House, with an end goal of donating a total of $60,000 in celebration of its 60 years in business.

About EPI-HAB

Started in 1958 by a group of business and medical professionals, EPI-HAB’s mission is to provide meaningful employment for individuals with epilepsy and other challenges. As epilepsy treatment has improved over the last 60 years, EPI-HAB has expanded its mission to welcome employees living with hearing impairment, physical limitations and mild intellectual disabilities.

EPI-HAB Funds Summer Camp Tuition, “Techie Camp” Tuition and “Cops for Kids” with Recent “Six Decades of Service” Donations

It’s been a busy month at EPI-HAB! In addition to its $5,000 gift to Ryan House at the beginning of April, several “Six Decades of Service” donations were made to worthy causes over the past couple of weeks.

Donation 1: Lura Turner Homes Summer Camp Tuition

First, EPI-HAB paid the Lura Turner Homes (LTH) summer camp tuition ($1425) for our three employees who are also LTH residents.

At EPI-HAB, we provide meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with epilepsy and other challenges. Typical work focuses on hand labor skills, and all employees are paid at or above minimum wage.

LTH provides a safe, enriching and loving environment for adults living with disabilities in the Phoenix area. The organization emphasizes a family-like atmosphere, encourages the development of a strong, positive work ethic, and offers recreational activities and community involvement opportunities to its residents.

Over the years, LTH has developed a strong relationship with EPI-HAB, providing our organization with several employees as well as a board member.

Donation 2: Cops for Kids

EPI-HAB also presented a $600 donation (a Silver Level sponsorship) to the Maricopa County Fraternal Order of Police Lodge #5’s 2018 “Cops for Kids” event.

For many children, there’s no greater thrill than sitting in a cop car. Through “Cops for Kids,” youngsters with physical or mental disabilities get the special opportunity to rub elbows with the area’s law enforcement and check out police vehicles and equipment up close.

The mission of the event aligns with EPI-HAB’s commitment to Phoenix’s special needs community.

Donation 3: Techie Camp Tuition

And last but not least, EPI-HAB presented $1,000 to AZ Strut, a long time customer, to be put toward Title 1 student tuition to the organization’s “Techie Camp.”

At camp, students learn to tear down a laptop computer, reassemble it and configure it. The best part about “Techie Camp” is that every camper gets to take the functional laptop they’ve been building home with them. EPI-HAB’s donation will fund the tuition for 50 students who are unlikely to have a computer available at home.

EPI-HAB Gifts $5,000 to Child-Focused Respite and Palliative Care Facility

Donation to Ryan House is sixth in series celebrating “Six Decades of Service”

Yesterday, EPI-HAB Phoenix, Inc. made a $5,000 donation to Ryan House, a child-focused respite and palliative care facility in Phoenix.

30221444_1742440609111887_1239368669310484480_n

To commemorate 60 years in business, EPI-HAB is donating a total of $60,000 to local nonprofits in the coming months. The organization is more than halfway to its goal, having already made “Six Decades of Service” donations to several organizations, including Lura Turner Homes, The Epilepsy Foundation of Arizona, Phoenix Children’s Hospital, Arizona Animal Welfare League & SPCA and Lions Camp Tatiyee.

Matt Redmann, President of EPI-HAB, explains, “We chose to give Ryan House a gift because while epilepsy in and of itself is not a life-limiting condition to qualify for Ryan House services, it is one of the highest co-morbidity diagnoses for qualification of services.  And at Ryan House, the child as a whole is considered when qualifying for services.”

About Ryan House:

EPI-HAB’s gift helps Ryan House embrace children and their families navigating life-limiting or end-of-life journeys through on-site respite and palliative care. Providing services at no cost to families, Ryan House is the only organization of its kind in the Southwest and one of just two in the United States.

Parents and their child can stay overnight at Ryan House, or the child can stay while his or her family gets away to rest, renew and reconnect with other siblings for a vacation or is just given a break from the daily challenges presented by caring for a seriously ill child.

For up to 28 days a year, a family can benefit from Ryan House’s round-the-clock clinical care team, which features nurses, nursing assistants and spiritual care specialists. The organization provides activities, like swimming and sleepovers, to children whose medical conditions make normative childhood experiences more difficult.

Ryan House is also able to assist in fulfilling some end-of-life wishes of children under palliative care and serves families wishing to stay with a terminally ill child in the final days.

About 85 percent of the children Ryan House serves live in Maricopa County.

Typical work focuses on hand labor skills, with EPI-HAB often operating as a customer’s production plant and warehouse; receiving, storing and fulfilling orders.

An example of this is EPI-HAB’s longstanding relationship with SRP’s M-Power unit program. EPI-HAB receives the M-Power Units several times per day, strips each unit of its packaging materials and sorts them by model number. Each unit is then scoped for operational defects, and the units that pass inspections are deep cleaned. Once thoroughly cleaned, the M-Power units are repackaged, with all new informational brochures and returned to the warehouse, where they’ll await re-issue to the next customer.

About Lions Camp Tatiyee

Lions Camp Tatiyee is a series of week-long summer camps with the mission of enriching the lives of individuals with special needs by providing experiences that promote emotional health, independence, self-esteem and confidence.  Each week at camp is provided at no cost to the camper.

Since 1958, Lions Camp Tatiyee has faithfully carried out their mission of providing services to more than 450 children and adults with special needs each season. To date, Camp Tatiyee is the only summer camp for the Arizona special needs community which charges its campers nothing. They represent a critical service for low-income families beset with the burdensome medical costs associated with special needs.

Lions Camp Tatiyee also leads the field in programmatic innovation, adapting activities such as rock climbing, archery, go-kart racing, robotics, arts and crafts, baseball, and more.

EPI-HAB’s gift will help cover tuition fees for campers.

Why was Lions Camp Tatiyee Chosen as a “Six Decades of Service” Beneficiary?

Lions Camp Tatiyee’s values are congruent with EPI-HAB’s commitment to offering meaningful employment to Phoenix’s special needs community. Both organizations encourage the people they work with to challenge their perceived limitations to become more confident, independent and happy.  Camp Tatiyee serves campers with epilepsy, physical limitations and hearing impairment.

EPI-HAB was made aware of Camp Tatiyee and the need for tuition assistance through Jeff Golner and Kasey Kaler of STEM Sports, a customer of EPI-HAB.

Why AAWL?

When EPI-HAB first began planning its 60th Anniversary Celebration, it asked its customers which community non-profits they supported and which they would like to see benefit from EPI-HAB’s “Six Decades of Service” celebration. AAWL was among the thoughtful responses.

About AAWL

The mission of the AAWL is to end unnecessary euthanasia of dogs and cats in the community. Founded in 1971, AAWL operates the state’s oldest and largest no-kill shelter, as well as the most comprehensive humane education program in the Valley, with classes for adults and children’s camps. The organization also offers a clinic providing low-cost veterinary services at its central Phoenix campus. AAWL receives no federal or state funding. “A great many employees (past and present), local businesses and individuals worked together to make EPI-HAB thrive and provide six decades of meaningful employment opportunities for those with epilepsy and other challenges,” said Redmann. “Leading EPI-HAB into our 60th anniversary celebration, I could not be more proud. To give back to our fellow nonprofits, what better way to say ‘thank you’ to our customers, friends and community for supporting us since 1958?”

EPI-HAB was founded with the mission to provide meaningful employment to individuals with epilepsy by performing valued work for customers.
